The Bible, as a spiritual guide for Christians, provides valuable insights and instructions on how believers should live their lives in accordance with their faith. One profound passage that offers guidance on Christian living is Ephesians 4:17-24. In this scripture, the Apostle Paul implores the Ephesian believers, and by extension all Christians, to live in a manner that reflects their transformed nature in Christ.

Understanding the Passage:

Let's first examine Ephesians 4:17-24 to grasp the essence of Paul's message:

"So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." - Ephesians 4:17-24 (NIV)

1. Rejecting the Old Way of Life This picture was taken from "Just a Thought"

Paul begins by urging believers to break away from the patterns of life characteristic of those who do not follow Christ. He emphasizes the futility and darkness that permeate the thinking of those disconnected from God. Christians are called to leave behind our former ways, which were driven by ignorance and impurity.

2. Embracing the Transformation in Christ

Paul highlights the transformative power of the Gospel. When accepting Christ, humans are enlightened by the truth of His teachings, and begin a journey of renewal. This renewal extends beyond mere external changes; it involves a fundamental shift in the mindset and the way the world is viewed.

3. Putting Off the Old Self

Central to Christian living is the concept of putting off the old self. This signifies a deliberate choice to shed the previous sinful nature and the deceptive desires that come with it. Through Christ, people can overcome the corruption that once enslaved them.

4. Embracing the New Self

In discarding the old, Christians embrace the new self created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. This new self embodies the qualities of Christ, including love, compassion, and purity. It reflects their identity as children of God and encourages believers to live a life marked by godly virtues.

5. Living in True Righteousness and Holiness

Living in true righteousness and holiness involves aligning thoughts, actions, and desires with the principles and teachings of Christ. It calls for a lifestyle that mirrors the character of God, marked by love, honesty, integrity, and a genuine desire to seek and follow His will.

Therefore, Ephesians 4:17-24 serves as a powerful reminder for Christians to live in a manner worthy of their calling in Christ. It invites believers to forsake their old ways and embrace the transformative power of the Gospel. By putting on the new self and living in righteousness and holiness, Christians embody the love of Christ and fulfill their purpose as believers in this world.

May you continually strive to live a life that reflects the beauty of Christ's redeeming grace.
